Coll de l’ofre from Cuber Reservoir

This 13km circular walk from Cuber reservoir takes you over three 1000m plus rocky peaks and offers spectacular views over the Orient Valley and the two island reservoirs before descending to Coll de l’Ofre and returning along the GR221 to the start point. There is also the option of finishing in either the villages of Biniaraix or Fornalutx.

The walk

The walk begins by the entrance to Cuber reservoir. We follow the track to the reservoir dam. Puig Major and the radar station tower behind us. By the dam we take a path which passes through a tunnel and ascends the eastern side of sa Rateta. To the left is the beautiful Orient Valley in which lies the Comasema estate. The route follows a walled trail which leads across rocky terrain to the first peak, Sa Rateta (1113m). From here you can see both Cuber and Gorg Blau reservoirs in the northern valley. Often the sky is filled with swifts and circling vultures.

We then take a southerly path descending to the Coll des Gats. The path is steep in sections so walking poles are recommended. It then rises to the second peak of na Franquesa (1067m). Again you enjoy wonderful views across the valleys on both sides. On a clear day you can see the Bay of Alcudia in the north of the island. Maintaining the southerly direction we descend to the Coll des Cards and ascend through a wood of pines to the third peak of Puig de l’Ofre (1107m). Pausing here there are views to the Soller Valley and the Port. We then descend to the Coll de l’Ofre, joining the GR221. It is a gentle downhill route to the reservoir and eventually the start point.

Alternative Decents

Biniaraix - we follow the GR221 through the Barranc to the village of Biniaraix in the Soller Valley. (14km ; 5hrs 30mins).

Fornalutx - we go across the Son Torrella Valley, through the Portell de sa Costa and make a steep descent to the village of Fornalutx. (14km ; 5hrs 30mins).

Beautiful countryside, great views and just enough challenges. Jeremy managed to pitch the walk perfectly to all levels.
