 The walk

The walk begins at the Coll de sa Batalla outside Lluc where there is a bar-restaurant at 580m. After following the GR222 a short distance we take a track which leads to the entrance to the Comafreda Estate. It then rises through woodland to Coll de sa Linia. We follow a meandering path uphill eventually emerging onto bare rock.

The path continues up the slope which is steep in places. We reach the Font de s’Avenc and have the chance to explore the cave. The path continues and soon the summit of Massanella is visible. Usually we stop on the summit (1365m) to enjoy the views and have a snack. Often swifts circle around us.

The descent takes us along a ridge which is the backbone of the mountain. Scrambling in a few places we find our way to the south west shoulder of Massanella. We take a path which joins the GR221 and leads to the Coll des Prat (1106m). From there we follow a stony path into a valley passing the remnants of ice houses and eventually to the entrance of the estate through which we passed earlier. We retrace our steps along the track to the Coll de sa Batalla and a refreshing cold drink.

Alternative descent

From the Coll des Prat we have the option of taking the GR221 which descends into a valley and ascends to the Coll des Telegraf and onwards to a junction where we take a path to the summit of Puig d’en Galileu. We traverse the left side of a valley to la Criança (860m) and descend a rocky wooded slope scrambling in a few places. We return to the Coll de sa Batalla.

His attention to people’s safety and welfare during the hike was extremely reassuring and impressive.
