Fornalutx to Binaraix via Coll De L’Ofre

This is the mountain route between the picturesque villages of Fornalutx and Biniaraix in the Sóller Valley. There are superb views over Sóller, the Port and the two villages from vantage points high on the eastern side of the Valley and a spectacular descent through the Barranc de Biniaraix.

The walk

The walk begins in the main square of Fornalutx (160m) beneath the Gothic church. After passing the old defence tower we join the Cami de Creuer and cross the bridge over the torrent. The track climbs though orange orchards and olive terraces before joining a steep path up the eastern side of the Valley. There is a short scramble in a couple of places.

One can see the Port of Sóller and lighthouse and, to the north, Penyal des Migdia with the radar station on Puig Major appearing to the side of it. Eventually you reach the Portell de sa Costa, a cleft in the ridge.

From here we follow a path across the head of the Son Torella Valley to the Coll de l’Ofre (975m).  Cuber reservoir is to our left. A short detour allows us to enjoy a birds eye view over Sóller.

Taking the GR221 there is a descent via the pilgrims’ steps through the steep-sided Barranc to Biniaraix. One can see olive terraces built high on the slopes of the Barranc and small dwellings in seemingly inaccessible places.

Finally we reach the village of Biniaraix where we can enjoy a refreshing drink in a cafe in the village square.

Fantastic experience with a guide who knows his way!
