Puig de Galatzó from Estellencs

Although only 1027m in height the pyramid-shaped Puig de Galatzó stands proud and distinctive at the southwestern end of the Serra de Tramuntana. The panoramic views from the summit are spectacular including the Bay of Palma and the central plain to the east.

The walk

This almost circular walk approaches the prominent peak of Galatzó from the western side passing through wooded slopes and and onto steep rocky terrain ascending to the summit. The descent is made on a different rugged path which leads to a point close to our start. The walk begins at Km97 south of Estellencs on the Ma-10 road (380m).

We follow a track uphill to a picnic area and head north, descending in places but mostly ascending through the wooded slopes of a valley. We pass Puig Babaiós to our right, an infant beside Galatzó, and continue the uphill route. At an intersection of paths we turn left through a small gap in the rock. After passing the ruin of a hut we make a steep and rugged climb, scrambling in a few places, to reach the summit and trig point of Galatzó. There we pause for a snack and allow time to enjoy the magnificent views.

We retrace the path to the intersection and descend west along a rugged, undulating path which traverses a slope and leads past a well into woodland. Soon we reach the picnic area from where we return to the track leading to the start point. A short distance away a cold drink can be deservedly enjoyed in Estellencs.

We all returned home with delightful memories of our wonderful time walking in the hills of Mallorca.
