Socks

Of course the choice depends on the season and weather. Plainly you need a thicker sock when it’s cold. There are two obvious rules: wear what are comfortable and do not cause your feet to be cold or too hot. Also a good tip when you try new shoes or boots is to take your sock range with you. Don’t just rely on the customer socks in the shop. And they are usually smelly! You want to ensure the shoes are comfortable with your range of socks.

A few years ago I tried a pair of lambs wool Marks & Spencer’s socks, which I wore when a lawyer, because I had no technical socks clean. They were a revelation. They had a natural wicking quality, were very comfortable and my feet did not become too hot. Now on milder and hot days I always wear a pair.

Buff

An essential addition to every rucksack. They provide warmth to the neck, ears or head disproportionate to their lightness. They come in a wide range of colours and designs. Tramuntana Tours in Port Sóller keep a wide stock.

Cap/Hat & Beanie

Also essential items. A cap or hat protects the crown of the head when it’s hot and shields the top of the face from the sun’s rays. On colder days a beanie importantly keeps the head warm. It takes away from the enjoyment of a hike if, through omission, you are either too hot or too cold.

Packing spare items

It’s a good idea to pack a spare (technical) T Shirt and pair of socks in your rucksack. A change always seems to lift your energy level especially after a  sweaty ascent.
